Cut for a Cure: A Student-Led Initiative Making a Difference
Introduction: A Powerful Initiative at St Augustine's College
This year, St Augustine's College witnessed a heartwarming and impactful event—Cut for a Cure. Led by Head Prefect and Heavey House Captain, Angus McInnes (Class of 2024), this campaign was more than just a fundraiser; it was a deeply personal cause that resonated with many in our school community. As Term 2 unfolded, it became clear that this was not just another event on the school calendar but a powerful movement that touched the hearts of students, staff, and families alike.
The Main Event: Cutting for a Cause
On Monday 24 June, the Saints community came together for the culminating event of the Cut for a Cure campaign. Students and staff lined up to get their hair styled, cut, or even shaved by some of our most talented aspiring barbers. It was a sight to behold—hundreds of students and teachers gathering in the spirit of solidarity and support during their lunchtime.
This event was not just about raising money; it was about raising awareness and building a sense of community. The outpouring of support was overwhelming, and by the end of the event, over $68,000 had been raised for the Isaac Fund. For those who missed the event, a glimpse of the spirit and fun can be seen on St Augustine's College social media accounts, where photos from the day capture the joy and commitment of all involved.
The Isaac Fund: A Legacy of Love
The Cut for a Cure initiative holds special meaning, as it honours the memory of Isaac McInnes, Angus’ older brother. Isaac was diagnosed with an inoperable and aggressive brain tumour in late 2017. Isaac passed away just ten months later, at the age of 13, on November 26, 2018. The Isaac Fund was established in 2018 to support treatments and research into childhood brain cancer, ensuring Isaac’s legacy lives on and helps others facing similar battles.
Beyond the Cut: Continuing the Fight
The success of the Cut for a Cure event has inspired further generosity within the St Augustine's College community. A mufti-day organised by our Student Representative Council on the last day of term added to the fundraising total, bringing the current amount raised to an incredible $79,325! This impressive sum will go directly to the Children’s Cancer Institute of Australia, funding vital research into childhood brain cancer.
We extend our heartfelt thanks to Angus, his parents Geraldine and Gary, Jake O’Brien (Acting Head of Year 8), and everyone else who contributed to making this initiative a success. Whether through organising, participating, or donating, each member of the Saints community played a part in making a difference.
A Call to Action: Continuing the Spirit of Giving
The Cut for a Cure campaign is a testament to what can be achieved when passion meets purpose. We encourage all students at St Augustine's College, regardless of their year group, to think about how they can contribute to causes they care about. There are countless ways to make a difference—whether it’s through raising awareness, using personal skills and talents, or simply showing up for those in need.
Final Thoughts: The Power of Experiential Learning
At St Augustine's College, we believe in the power of experiential learning. Events like Cut for a Cure not only raise funds but also provide meaningful opportunities for students to learn, grow, and make a positive impact. We are proud of our Saints community and look forward to seeing more students take up the mantle of social justice and create their own initiatives.
